I personally think parallel processing is a good thing for drums. But I would never use it for all my drum tracks. For rock music it's great, but for some songs I think it can be too much. I'm more of a purist though when it comes to drums. I think some people try to use this technique to compensate for poor source material.
I think thats a little bit of a generalisation- there are a stack of different psychoacoustic effects you can achieve by varieties of paralleling.
