With a good guitar an amp, it's hard to go wrong. It's highly reccomended that your preamp is a transformer balanced one on guitar (a la Neve, API, Chandler). The choice of mic is up to you. Most people use the 57's, a lot of peole use 121's, some people use Sennheiser e609 silvers/e606's/md 421's, others like the Blue Baby Bottle. It just depends what you are going for. The position of the mic depends on the mic you are using and the sound you want but it is as crucial as mic choice. 1 inch moves can make or break a guitar sound sometimes.

High passing guitars (pick your frequency), using fewer mics due to phase issues and turning down distortion prevents muddiness.
