Bad noise floor. Harsh sound. Lack of headroom. Lack of control (too slow, too fast), loss of bandwidth.

Basically, compression/limiting can easily damage a sound. The better they are, the less they appear to be working.

A lot is subjective and open to artistic interpretation. There are some compressors that impart a sound, even in bypass mode, that some people like. T

Give yourself a chance to play around with some high end stuff - it becomes clearer very quickly. If you just mess around with cheap stuff, you may never realise what you are missing.
