Two hardware items not mentioned yet that I use for unique filter efx with guitar are the Linn Addrenalinn II and the Dave Smith Evolver. Both units sync to MIDI clock. The Linn takes a little longer to program and there are some limitations to what you can get out of it but I love the filter sounds. It can be very warm and rich sounding. Definately an autowah taken to the extreme with cool delay features. I always bypass amp modeling and use it with an A/B/Y box. That way I can send the guitar sound to a tube amp and the Linn goes to either the mixing board (in stereo) or another guitar amp. Stir vigorously and mix to taste.
I have the Evolver mono keyboard and it has audio inputs that are routed thru the filters and efx. The cool thing here is you have realtime knobs for each control, it's fast and fun, old school programming. There are some factory presets for guitar input and this thing will make crazy sounds. The programming can be simple or deep, it's up to you. Oh yeah, it's a killer synth too.
