Nothing unusual about that, I was turned down for a job at SoundControl (UK answer to SamAsh/GC) despite being told outright that I was pretty much guarenteed a position. The way I think it works in the selection of staff for such places is as follows:
1: Your face/haircut must fit.
2: You must talk like them
3: Being part of the same social circle helps
4: Must turn up for work
5: Must have a clue and know anything at all about the stock
In retrospect I'm glad I didn't get it though, the shift hours would have made it impossible to pursue recording outside of work.
