Well, you asked the question and answered it in 2 ways yourself. The waves C4 works great and so does the tube screamer...are you looking for other tips besides the ones you gave yourself?
Mic position...cabinet type can be a big player. A single 12" can often be more clearn than 4x12's. a fast preamp like api or sytek helps as well.
