It doesn't make sense most all the time, I'll agree. However, Sly Stone did this A LOT (not to mention starting in New York with a guitar line, flying to San Fran to get a bass he left at his Mom's house, and then going to LA to put that down, then going back to San Fran to do vocals, and then maybe go to Chicago to finally get around to those drums) and his music is pretty groovin'.
