Yes -- the frame is pretty much solely for the purposes of providing support for the rigid fiberglass/mineral fiber panels, which can sag over time without support, and also to make it easier to hang the panels.
Otherwise, there is NO disadvantage doing them without a wood frame, and indeed there is an advantage that you expose that much more porous absorption material to the room.
