it does nothing to your sound. it passes whatever you feed it in or out of it.
It offers to handle your digital signal in a very versatile way though. Routing / format assignments / different sample rates etc ... and of course integration in you Protools setup.
It's basic idea is to get digital signals in and out of Protools through external peripherals ... wether those are FX or AD or DA ... doesn't realy matter ...
Lots of people welcomed the all digital interface exactly for the reasons you described.
