Don't want to get too off topic Lou.. but you name me a rock record, and it'll probably have samples. As a mixer I constantly get "can you make my drums sound like.... ?" and the most common in the past three weeks are:
Deftones: samples
Nirvana Nevermind: samples
Black Crowes: samples
Korn: samples
John Mayer: samples
Hoobastank: samples
Switchfoot: samples
They are a tool for a mixer to use to help out sounds. There is no shame in anything that a mixer does as long as it delivers a kick ass sound. If you start feeling bad, then feel bad about everything: Multitracking for instance. How does Steven Tyler sing his 8 tracks of background vocals if he's only ONE man? How come most bands have one guitarist but there are wide panned guitars? You'll go insane if you start thinking that way. You just have to deliver. Drum samples have been and will be a part of rock mixing, thats that.
