Bobby Torres who as percussionist played with TJ's touring band for close to two decades related the following story to me:
Every time TJ would come to Portland in recent years, he would make a point of inviting his old bandmate Torres back stage for the shows. One time, Torres returned the favor and invited TJ to come on down and listen to his small Latin group in a tiny club at the opposite end of town. TJ promised to show up later that night after his big show at the Colisseum was over.
Not thinking much about TJ's words, come 1 AM that night, two huge tour busses drive up to the front of the tiny club, and TJ, all of his bandmates and assorted road entourage peel out and squeeze into the club. They all stayed and listened until Bobby's last set was over, to continue drinking pints and reminiscing until the early moring hours.
Bobby related the story as one example of the class the man has.
