My drummer does it this way. It's the easiest, quickest way. If you get it hot enough it's great. If it's not hot enough though, it can come out jagged. Also you have to make sure the tension on the head is the same as how it will be played, otherwise if you tighten it after you burn the hole, it can turn out asymmetrical or crack.
