bob, it won´t help delaying the return when the mix is phasey, cause the eq´s phaseshifts are frequency dependent....so you would have to delay only specific bands of the return to get stuff back in phase with the original signal - and there is no way how to find out which areas are shifted by what time....
so all you can do is listen and see if you like the result or not. I have often found that parallel compression along with parallel eq on the mixbuss can sound really cool - a nice alternative to insert compression and insert eq. try to parallel compress the mix and boost the bass, cut the mids and boost the highs on the parallel signal - sometimes this sounds way cooler than "smile-eqing" the mix on the insert.
