For a digital system to work for live, it would have to basically have the exact same functionality as a analog setup. I did some live gigs with the new Tascam board and it was a serious bummer...
Sure, a touchscreen system COULD be developed- that could half-ass work for faders, and mute-ing, but it wouldn't do that well for eq and panning. And it really sucks to have only one set of 4 knobs or something to control channel strip functions. It is so much easier to be able to tweak multiple channels without having to toggle back and forth.
There is a reason why analog consoles developed the way they have, functionality wise- b/c it makes the job EASIER. All of the digital systems so far make the job HARDER.
