My mics aren't as good as the pre's but i have 2 KSM32's, Audix i5, Audix D1, Audix D6, 2 SM57, 3 Oktava MC012's, AKG D112, Blue Blueberry. I'm recording the drums in a carpeted room, and it has low ceilings, its pretty much a very dead cause there is a lot of stuff to dampen/catch all the sound.
Enough info?
My org idea was to use the KSM32's on Overheads with the API A2D, but am now thinking I should use the Pacifica or something...that's my main concern, cause when I mix, it seems most of the sound I get is from the overheads.
I'd really appreciate anyones opinions and feedback. Thanks |
This is probably a bit late ... but here's my couple of cents anyhow.
I would make sure that the kit your going to record is in top shape. Meaning :
1. make sure the skins are in excellent shape and sound appropriate for the music / style you want to record.
2. make sure the drummer spends enough time tuning the kit .... take your time to listen inside the room how it sounds. If something sounds bad or weird or whatever in the room that you do not want to hear in your recording ... FIX it right there at the source. Do whatever is necessary to make sure it sounds allright in that room. I'm thinking stuff like 'zooming toms' .... or a snare tuned with too many overtones etc etc ... FIX it.
3. if your room doesn't sound good .... dfegad on the room mics ... too bad but it ain't worth wasting time to put room mics in a room that sux.
From what I can see what you have at your disposal gearwise you should be pretty fine to be able to do a decent recording. The Audix mics are excellent, the D112 is kinda a no brainer .... like you said it yourself ... that's the gear you're going to use ... use it .... period.
As for Api on this, portico on that and all that kinda blah .... You can either follow some of the valid advises allready given in this thread or you can go and break the rules ... whatever ....
As long as you realize that no matter what combination you make is going to sound pretty damn good if the kit sounds pretty damn good and that it is going to pretty damn suck if the kit sucks ... then you should be set.
Oh ... Of course I presume the drummer knows how to play ....
And a last 'oh' .... I'd stick with the D112 on the Bassdrum ..... when I say break the rules ... I don't mean go use the D112 as an overhead ... but then again .... prove me wrong.
