The advantage with native plugins is half of the latency which is important when recording (headphone mixes).
At the moment it's not possible to use UAD-1, Duende when recording.
I mix as I go, so when I do overdubs at a later stage I have to print the mix and get rid of all UAD-1 Duende for low latencies.
That's what I like about Waves SSL plugins. Only 1 sample latency. Guess that's about it what I like about Waves. |
I use the UAD (I have 3) and Duende primarily for mixing and I have no probelm with latency then because Cubase SX has full latency compensation. I only use hardware when I record.
I own the SSL bundle as well and I find the Duende sounds a bit smoother and has more possibilities.
As far as Duend or UAD being "glorified Dongles" I agree to a point, but I don't have the time to setup a new computer - if I were to buy one - and an extra 32 channel strips always comes in handy. The Waves plugins cost me 700 Euros and the Duende cost me twice as much so I feel that having this extra DSP AND the plugins to be a very fair price. God, I couldn't imagine taking a week off to set up a new computer, partly because I'm lazy and partly because I would have to install SOOO much stuff... no fun at all. Anyway I'm happy to know that for the next year at least I'll be very well equiped for my work.
